New London Alcohol & Drug Rehab Options

New London Addiction Treatment Resources

Since its founding in 1823, New London, Connecticut, has diversified into a town full of modern development. It’s known for having a vibrant art scene, multiple housing options, and several hot spots for dining and entertainment. Since it’s on the waterfront and has deep ports, New London serves as a hub of maritime transportation.

Unfortunately, New London is like many other Connecticut communities in that it has felt the impact of the opioid epidemic. Within the first six months of 2019, 12 people in the town died from overdose. It’s worth noting that seven people died in the first six months of 2018.

This reflects a trend that is seen throughout Connecticut. In 2017, the state had 955 opioid-related overdose deaths. This broke down to 27.7 deaths for each 100,000 people in the state. This number on its own is alarming. However, it’s more alarming when you realize that Connecticut is experiencing overdose deaths at a rate twice that of the rest of the country.

Statistics provided by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services for Connecticut show that in 2018, more than 57,500 residents were treated in substance use programs. Of that group, 6,947 individuals in Connecticut were treated for substance use and mental health problems. Reports clearly indicate that substance use disorders affect people from every walk of life, background, and race in Connecticut.

If you or someone you love is currently battling with substance use disorder, more commonly referred to as addiction, you should know that there is help available. You don’t need to try to break free from substance use disorder on your own.

Types of Treatment

In Connecticut, you will find rehab centers that fall into one of three categories:

  • Inpatient
  • Outpatient
  • Specialty program

If you choose to use an inpatient facility, you will reside at the rehab center for a set period of time. Inpatient programs offer many special features. They may include group therapy, individual therapy, and physical and educational activities. Once you finish the inpatient program, you may be encouraged to enroll in an outpatient program, which will allow you to continue with your treatment.

Outpatient programs are available for those who complete an inpatient program, or they may be used independently. As the name implies, an outpatient program does not involve living at the facility. Instead, you’ll attend treatment regularly on a schedule that will be created based on your individual needs.

Specialty programs may be tailored to meet your faith or general outlook on spirituality. You might enroll in a program that focuses on athletics, fitness, or art therapy. Many of these programs are designed to help you recover by socializing with peers. Other programs will use specialized types of therapy to teach you how to tackle your substance use. Specialized programs could be outpatient or inpatient.

Is There a Difference Between Detox and Rehab?

The first stage of rehab is removing addictive substances from your body. This process is called detoxification, or detox for short. During this process, your body will process or metabolize drugs and alcohol that are still in your system. As it does this, the toxic influence of the drugs will be removed.

Detox can be divided into two types:

  • Medically assisted detox: This process is done under the care of mental health and medical professionals. Their job is to increase your safety and comfort as you go through the withdrawal symptoms and possible medical complications that come from ending substance use. At times, medications may be administered to ease the cravings you have for the substance.
  • Clinically managed detox: This entails a non-medical strategy for someone wanting to break free from substance use. This may simply include providing a safe and comfortable environment for a person to go through the detox process. Other facilities may provide hands-on treatment, including peer encouragement and support from professionals as you go through detox.

Detox occurs in three phases. The first phase is evaluation. During this process, your mental health and physical health will be evaluated. The drugs or other substances in your system will be identified. Next, an appropriate strategy will be created to lay out how the detox process will go.

The second phase is stabilization. This is the bulk of the detox process. During this phase, you’ll be acclimated to the detox process and receive medical or psychological assistance to help treat symptoms if such assistance is required.

The third step is setting the groundwork for further treatment. This third step is essential because detox on its own is not addiction treatment. Detox handles the physical side of substance use disorder, but it does nothing to address the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of the disorder.

Granite Recovery Centers

There are two rehab centers in our area that have built a reputation for genuinely helping people recover from substance use disorder. One is Green Mountain Treatment Center, and the other is New Freedom Academy.

New Freedom Academy is in New Hampshire and sits on a stunning 17-acre property of private woods. This is a secluded location that has been cultivated to aid in recovery.

There are only 20 beds at this facility, which allows for a low client-to-clinician ratio. This facility is perfect if you’re looking for a more intimate interaction with caregivers than you would receive in a larger treatment center. New Freedom Academy has built its reputation on being able to approach addiction using a level of clinical excellence that is unparalleled in the field.

Some of the tools that are used include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Grief and loss therapy
  • Process groups
  • Motivational interviewing
  • One-on-one therapy

New Freedom Academy focuses on a holistic approach to treatment. They understand that in order for you to recover, you must be treated as a whole person, including your spirit, your mind, and your body. To this end, things like meditation, yoga, and physical exercise are included as a way of helping you boost endorphins, reduce stress, and get in a mental state that’s conducive for recovery.

Nutritious meals, workshops, pinball, bowling, mini-golf, medical-assisted treatment, and educational programs are just a few of the amenities this center offers.

Green Mountain Treatment Center is also located in a secluded and panoramic area of New Hampshire. Through the recovery process, you’ll have clear views of the White Mountains and the Lakes Region. You’ll see apple orchards and rolling hills. This is the perfect environment for recovery.

Green Mountain Treatment Center is designed for adult patients. Men and women are treated at the same facility, but they are housed and treated separately. A 12-step curriculum using evidence-based medicine is at the heart of this program. During treatment, you’ll be encouraged to look deeply inside yourself with the goal of getting to the underlying cause of your addiction. This introspective work coupled with the evidence-based 12-step program will build a basis on which emotional healing can be built.

The center offers:

  • Individualized treatment plans
  • Client to client programs
  • Medical detox
  • Holistic therapies

GMTC has been created to allow you to focus entirely on your recovery. On-site chefs will prepare delicious meals for you. There’s also a gym and places for meditation and yoga. We offer a full continuum of care, including medical detox as needed and treatment for co-occurring mental disorders. Granite Recovery Centers provides medical detoxification for people who do not need immediate medical intervention, are not a danger to themselves, and are capable of self-evacuation in the event of an emergency.

If you or someone you love is dealing with substance use disorder, do not allow shame or frustration to hold you back from getting the help needed. There are many people in New London who have successfully faced the same challenges you are facing. Recovery is possible.
