There are plenty of reasons why the estimated population of just over 30,000 continues to live in Rochester, NH. The city is accessible by several routes including 11, 108 and 125 as well as 202. About 45 square miles of rolling hills and rivers make up the city. It is also within reasonable driving distance of the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. The mountains are home to ski resorts, and the coast is home to superb beaches.

Rochester, NH, is nicknamed the “Lilac City.” It holds the annual Lilac Family Fun Festival in the spring. The city is also home to the historic Rochester Opera House and hosts other civic events like the summer festival at the Rochester Commons, an annual Fourth of July celebration and the Rochester Fair.

Despite all the civic activities available in Rochester, the city is not immune to the current drug overdose epidemic that the United States is experiencing. The New England area has seen its share of drug overdose issues. Residents of New Hampshire can find some reassurance that the issues are being addressed by their government officials.

Those who are struggling with drug addiction or alcohol abuse should know that they are not alone. There are several ways to get help that involve short-term and long-term solutions.

Here is some information about the current epidemic, how to get help and the type of help available to consider.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Overdose Statistics

In 2019, there were 70,980 recorded drug overdose deaths in the United States. This was a 4.6% increase from 2018. Synthetic opioids, not including methadone, have been found to be the culprit. The five regions with the highest rate of overdose deaths were West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia and Kentucky. New Hampshire found itself in the top 10.

To understand the problem, it is a good idea to understand the substances involved in the current epidemic:

  • Natural opioids such as morphine and codeine
  • Semi-synthetic opioids such as oxycodone, hydrocodone and hydromorphone as well as oxymorphone
  • Methadone, a synthetic opioid that is categorized on its own
  • Synthetic opioids such as tramadol and fentanyl
  • Heroin, an opioid and illicit drug that is synthesized from morphine

The epidemic is traced back to the 1990s, and researchers use 1999 as the official starting point. At that time, medical professionals were prescribing opioids, but they did not realize the negative impact it would have on people’s lives down the road. In 2010, the medical community discovered a rise in deaths thanks to heroin. When that was happening, the medical community did not make the connection between prescription opioids and heroin. It turns out that people who were abusing or hooked on opioids started using heroin because they were seeking something stronger. The opioids were essentially not providing the same effect anymore.

In 2013, it was discovered that patients were becoming hooked on synthetic opioids. The most dangerous synthetic opioid has become fentanyl. Even the smallest dose can be lethal. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl can be found in heroin, counterfeit pills and cocaine.

Studies found that New Hampshire had 424 drug overdose deaths involving opioids in 2017. This was above the national average. Studies also found that New Hampshire providers were prescribing opioid prescriptions at a rate of 52.8 per 100 persons, which was below the national average.

A report delivered by New Hampshire’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner ranked Rochester third out of six cities in the state in terms of most overdose deaths for the 2019 year. The report did note that the deaths that occurred in each city were not necessarily residents of that city.

Getting Help With Drug and Alcohol Addiction

The report from New Hampshire’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner made an interesting point: Someone who experiences an overdose death is not necessarily a resident of the city where the incident occurs. There do tend to be hubs where people with addictions gather because they are mostly sure they will not be bothered while they are high. This is one of the reasons why some New England states have enacted Good Samaritan laws. Anyone who witnesses an overdose can call it into law enforcement and responders, no questions asked.

Government leaders have taken other proactive steps to fight back against the epidemic. This includes setting up hotlines as well as programs at hospitals and clinic where medication to reverse the symptoms of overdose is dispensed. On the local level, there are several free and low-cost programs available. There are also private rehab center options. The private options are usually more costly than publicly funded programs. This is because they offer more amenities, more programs on site and a low patient-to-staff ratio.

The reason why you are encouraged to get help is so that you can become a productive member of society again. The United States is experiencing a homeless epidemic, which some people say is connected to drug use.

In 2019, there were an estimated 567,715 homeless people in the United States, a number that continues to rise annually. On top of the alarming statistic, it is believed that the homeless are getting younger. Sometimes, homelessness is a result of addiction. Other times, addiction is a result of homelessness. It is estimated that 33% of those who are homeless are battling a mental illness, and some may self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. Getting clean helps you stay off the street. Plus, if you have a mental health issue, it can be treated concurrently with your addiction.

Types of Treatment Available

From 2013 to 2014, New Hampshire saw an increase of 40% in heroin-related deaths. There was also a 650% spike in fentanyl-related deaths. One of the reasons why New Hampshire has been such a hotbed for drug overdose deaths is because the substances are illegally run through the state on Interstate 95, Interstate 93 and Route 3.

In New Hampshire, government officials created the Medication Assisted Treatment Expansion program. It set up initiatives that aim to identify potential cases early and prevent overdoses.

There is more than one type of addiction. For this reason, there is more than one type of treatment to treat the disease available. The different types include:

  • Outpatient treatment
  • Inpatient treatment
  • Residential treatment
  • Recovery housing

It may be decided that an outpatient treatment is best for you. During your appointments, you may receive education, counseling and medication. Your initial consultation and diagnosis will decide the best course of treatment. Then, your progress will be judged. If you are making positive advancements, adjustments can be made to your treatment accordingly.

Some patients can handle an outpatient course of treatment while others cannot. Those who cannot escape the environment that caused the addiction in the first place may be better off checking into an inpatient program, a residential treatment program or recovery housing. Although you will return to your environment when the program is over, you will at least return after having the opportunity to detox, heal and learn how to live in a sober manner again.

During an inpatient program, you will remain in a hospital or hospital-like setting for at least 28 days. During that time, each patient receives intense treatment. Patients who enter a residential treatment receive intense treatment, too. The difference in residential treatment is that you are not in a hospital setting. Recovery housing is a supervised, temporary housing solution that include treatment programs.

The goal of treatment is to prepare you for life after rehabilitation. Once a person becomes an addict, there is always the possibility of relapse. A successful rehabilitation takes place when the patient can successfully live sober again.

Granite Recovery Centers

Overcoming an addiction to drugs or alcohol is possible. How much effort it is going to take on your part depends on several factors. How long you have been overpowered by your addiction matters as does the substance of your choice. Some substances are more addictive than others because they take over your body as well as your mental health.

Whether your case is mild or extreme, checking into a private rehabilitation program near Rochester, New Hampshire, is encouraged. In this setting, you are less likely to get distracted. Distractions lead to relapse. Some people do not recover from the relapse because they have to start over, which can be challenging.

Green Mountain Treatment Center and New Freedom Academy are two examples of rehab facilities that patients can check into for help. Each has its own set of benefits. They also share some similarities. Top-notch facilities tend to offer some of the best amenities like:

  • Nutritious, chef-prepared meals
  • Meditation and yoga
  • Scenic and secluded location

Overcoming addiction is as much about getting healthy as it is learning to resist the substance of choice in the future. Your body has to heal, and so does your mind. Eating meals that help your body heal from the inside is important. Learning how to be comfortable in your sober skin is important, too.

Other programs, benefits and amenities that Green Mountain Treatment Center offers are:

  • Individualized treatment plans
  • Medical detox
  • 12 step-centered curriculum
  • Clinical modalities

This center is situated in Effingham, NH, among the White Mountains and Lakes Region. It is a primary residential drug rehab facility that admits both men and women who are at least 18 years or older. The guiding practice for the center is the 12-step curriculum, which is integrated into evidence-based clinical therapies. The goal of the center is to ensure that patients can resist their substance of choice when they leave. In order to do so, they have to uncover how they fell into the hole of addiction in the first place. A patient’s mental health is evaluated. Then, it is healed too.

Treatments are customized to each patient. Even if two people are suffering from the same addiction, it does not mean that they became addicted for the same reasons. Each patient, therefore, receives their own course of treatment. Holistic therapies are also incorporated to help patients reconnect their mind, body and spirit. Calming the mind, enriching the spirit and healing the physical being are essential to remembering what it was like to live without the substance of choice.

At New Freedom Academy, patients can expect a low patient-to-staff ratio. The center only admits 20 patients at a time. The facility is known for its clinical excellence and evidence-based practices. There is a focus on clinical psychotherapeutic support that includes:

  • One-on-one individual therapy
  • Process groups
  • Treatment for co-occurring mental disorders
  • Motivational interviewing

There are also opportunities to partake in outings, exercise in the onsite gym and attend the educational workshops. New Freedom Academy is located in Canterbury, NH, in 17 private acres of the countryside, so there is room to roam.

Finding help is possible. Whether you begin with short-term solutions on the local level while you find the best private rehabilitation center or check into one right off the bat, overcoming your addiction is of the utmost importance for your health. Your family and friends also want you to get better.
