Stories of Addiction Recovery: Tim’s Story

Table of Contents

Often, in life, we struggle and we struggle through some of our hardest times thinking we will never get through it, until ultimately, finally. we just get it. The most significant life lessons typically work just this way. In this edition of Stories of Addiction Recovery, our own Tim Conlin, Business Development Representative, sits down with us to discuss his own road to recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, and the “light switch” which cemented his success.

In the beginning of sober living…

When I got to the Granite House originally, I was late a lot; I slept in. I was late for my meds and groups, and really everything. And I was constantly getting reprimanded and restricted for it. In doing so, The Granite House was able to teach me discipline, respect, and responsibility.

Now, I’m a man of my word…

It seems like such a small thing, but really it is impacted my life a lot. It’s helped me become a better person, and really just get to where I need to be, to be a man of my word. If I say I’m gonna be somewhere, I will be.

With a sense of purpose

Recovery has given me this sense of purpose that I can do things now. I can do this. I have the confidence in myself to be able to go out and put my mind to something, and know that I can do it. A lot of that confidence is the Granite Recovery Centers fellowship and the community that I surround myself with. We’re all striving for the same things: to be successful people in society. And this program, the 12 Steps have helped me realize that.

It’s like a light switch…

It’s like a light switch. To think of where my life was, how it has changed, and where it’s at now; it’s crazy. It’s crazy that I could be one person, then go through this program and be a completely different person on the other side. I am actually an enjoyable person to be around. People actually like me for me now. I wanted to be part of life, and so I really just bought in and it just kind of took off from there. It’s hard to explain how it happens. It just kinda like clicks. And the next thing you know, it’s like, “Wow! I can’t even remember the last time I thought about drinking or drugging!”. This used to be a thought that was in my mind 24/7, 365: “Where and when can I get my next fix?” Addicts and alcoholics, we’re strong people. Some of the best people I’ve ever met in my life are people in recovery. And we’re not just going to give in to this. We’re gonna fight.
