Helping clients get and stay sober
Granite Recovery Centers offers two adult residential drug rehab centers, Green Mountain Treatment Center in Effingham, NH and New Freedom Academy in Canterbury, NH. Residential drug treatment centers, sometimes referred to as inpatient drug rehab or simply drug rehab, are facilities where men and women addicted to drugs or alcohol can receive intensive, 24-hour monitored support in getting sober and developing the skills and insights needed to stay that way. Residential drug treatment programs typically treat both the physical and psychological effects of substance use disorders (SUDs). While the overarching goal of inpatient drug rehabs is to help the patient get and remain sober, treatment programs vary can vary greatly in length of stay and treatment approach.
Residential Detox Programs
Medical detox is provided as a part of some inpatient drug rehab programs, while other residential centers require detox (detox-only facilities) prior to admission. Granite Recovery Centers offers medical detox services at its Green Mountain Treatment Center in Effingham, NH. Medical detoxification is a process by which clients can safely cease using drugs or alcohol under the supervision and care of a medical professional trained in addiction medicine. Supervised medical detox is typically recommended for clients whose use tolerance is so high that stopping abruptly could cause serious physical problems, as well as for those who cannot stop using on their own.
Residential detox most often lasts 3-10 days, depending on the type of drug and use; and deals only with the physical dependency and withdrawal symptoms of the substance used. In facilities like Green Mountain Treatment Center that offer medical detox services as part of a full continuum of care, an individual assessment done following medical detox to determine the best next steps for each client.
Structured Client Schedules and Inpatient Drug Rehab Rules
Residential drug programs typically run from 30 to 90 days and recommend clients follow to a highly-structured daily schedule of individual and group psychotherapy sessions, physical exercise, chores, and study. The primary residential program at Granite Recovery Centers requires a 30-day stay. Freedoms are awarded after a period of time based on the client’s progress in the program. Basic rules include, but are not limited to:
- No drug or alcohol use
- No cellphones or electronic devices
- No romantic relationships
- Attendance of all meetings and therapy sessions
- Participation in basic chores
Evidence-Based Clinical Therapies
Inpatient drug rehab centers vary according to which overall treatment approaches and clinical therapies they implement in order to help clients work through and process the thoughts and feelings related to their substance use. Granite Recovery Centers utilizes both individual and group therapy sessions that help the clients understand the nature and triggers of their drug or alcohol addiction. Clinical modalities may include CBT, DBT, EMDR, and trauma therapy. Clinical therapies at GRC are conducted by licensed clinicians.
Drug and alcohol residential treatment programs also vary in their disposition on 12-Step programming. The 12 Steps of A.A. is a curriculum through which alcoholics and drug addicts work their way through the nature, triggers, behaviors, and effects of their substance use disorder to ultimately achieve a daily design for sober living. Few facilities integrate the 12 Steps as comprehensively throughout their treatment program as does Granite Recovery where the 12 Steps are core to our approach to addiction treatment.
Abstinence vs. Harm Reduction
Residential drug rehabilitation programs are either abstinence-based or harm-reductive. The abstinence approach requires the client to cease using drugs and alcohol completely. No exceptions. The harm-reduction approach will substitute drugs such as methadone or Suboxone for heroin use to wean the client off of the harder substance. Clients in harm reduction programs will sometimes use the substituted drug permanently. Granite Recovery Centers is an abstinence-based treatment program model and clients are expected to remain substance free throughout treatment and beyond.
Recovery Goal-Setting and Discharge Planning
From intake to discharge, a multidisciplinary treatment team of clinicians, 12-Step facilitators, and case workers work with clients to identify potential problems, implement therapies, chart progress, set goals, and develop discharge plans. Based on each client’s progress in the program and their ability to meet the goals that they set for themselves, our team of professionals will determine if the client is ready to “step down” to an extended care or sober living facility, or if they should continue residential treatment for a longer period of time. In most cases, clients will be referred to one of our extended care or sober living facilities or to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), as research shows that there is a direct relation between length of stay in any treatment program and a lasting recovery.
