Brockton Addiction Treatment Resources

Brockton, the 7th largest city in the state of Massachusetts, is rich with history. Home to former boxing champions Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler, it truly earns its nickname as the City of Champions. Once a part of Bridgewater, the City of Champions split away in 1821 and gained the name we know it by in 1874. Brockton’s history also includes producing millions of shoes during the Civil War and for decades afterward, maintaining a thriving industry of leather. It is also the second-windiest city in the country. Today, the city’s economy relies on its service industry. However, even this charming city is not immune to the opioid crisis.

Drug Addiction in Brockton, Massachusetts

The surge in fentanyl, the synthetic opioid analgesic that is 50-100 times more potent than morphine, is largely to blame for the rise in overdoses. In 2018 there were 120, and there was a 19% rise in 2019 with a total of 143 suspected overdose fatalities. Despite doubling down on efforts to curb the drug use in Brockton, there is still a long road ahead.

On any given day in Massachusetts, one can hear the stories about lives lost to drug and alcohol addiction. In particular, there is a growing epidemic of opioid abuse; deaths occur in every community and among every demographic.

Over the last few years, the state government has taken several steps to address this troubling trend with varying success. Though opioid prescriptions have reduced over time, overdoses still increase due to an increase in the use of fentanyl. Overall, the state budget for funding substance abuse services has grown, but addiction continues to plague cities like Brockton.

How to Get Help for Drug Addiction

For those struggling with drug addiction, the first step toward recovery is understanding that they have a problem with the substance and are dependent on it. The next step is to find the right treatment program that meets their needs, and they can then begin to restore their well-being and happiness.

Massachusetts residents have countless treatment options available to them. For example, those who suffer from severe forms of substance use disorder may benefit from a detox program before heading into rehab. Others may benefit just fine from an outpatient facility.

After getting treatment, it is generally a good idea to continue attending support groups and aftercare therapy to help reinforce the lessons learned at the rehab facility.

It’s not easy to recover from an addiction. Not only does it take willpower to overcome at first, but it also takes self-discipline to achieve long-term sobriety. Know that you’re never alone on the journey; during rehab, you have the opportunity to build strong relationships with others who are also recovering and can understand the difficulty of your path. Additionally, your friends, family and loved ones want to see you succeed. How successful your recovery from addiction is depends on what you put into it.

Why Get Help for Drug Addiction?

The siren call that spurs change in someone suffering from substance use disorder doesn’t sound the same to everyone. For some, it only happens once something irreplaceable has been lost. The following are common situations that prompt adults to seek treatment for addiction.

  • Loss of income: When addiction first begins, there’s usually money to keep funding the habit. However, the cost of satisfying the addiction often overtakes one’s ability to keep affording it. It’s not uncommon for people to miss work for days at a time after abusing drugs or alcohol. Some may even show up to work still high or drunk, and both scenarios can result in firing.
  • Loss of home: In a similar vein, loss of income makes it impossible to keep up on the rent or mortgage payments. Eventually, people addicted to drugs could lose their homes and end up living on the streets. Losing the roof over one’s head is one of the biggest wake-up calls for many people.
  • Loss of relationships: When suffering from addiction, people tend to withdraw from others so that they can keep spending time with their drug of choice. Others will avoid their loved ones so that they don’t have to answer any questions or deal with their suspicions or judgment. Of course, the addiction is not a secret, and ultimatums may arise at some point; some people only end up in rehab at the threat of a spouse leaving.
  • Loss of life: In some cases, loss of life can happen while someone is high or drunk. The loss of a friend due to overdose or driving under the influence may prompt someone to get help.
  • Hospitalization: Likewise, you can end up in the hospital after surviving an overdose. For many in rehab, the wake-up call was waking up in the hospital and realizing they had “hit rock bottom.”

Types of Treatment

Massachusetts houses a wealth of different treatment programs for Brockton residents to access. Programs are different for every client, and each can be tailored to suit their needs. The most effective treatment is a combination of programs customized to encourage a person to stay involved in his or her own recovery.

  • Inpatient rehab: Inpatient facilities offer structured programs around-the-clock so that an individual’s addiction is addressed from all sides. During inpatient rehab, residents live at the facility and have access to therapy and medical care at all hours. This is a good choice for those who suffer from chronic addiction and those who also suffer from behavioral disorders.
  • Outpatient rehab: Another form of comprehensive care, outpatient rehab facilities differ in that the client doesn’t need to live at the facility overnight. Otherwise, many of the treatment programs are the same effective ones found at inpatient rehabs. They’re a good choice for those who can and must continue working to support their families.

Alcohol and Drug Detox

Undergoing detoxification makes it safer to withdraw from a substance until it is no longer found in the body. For many suffering from severe addiction, this is the first step before taking residence in a rehab. Granite Recovery Centers provides medical detoxification for people who do not need immediate medical intervention, are not a danger to themselves, and are capable of self-evacuation in the event of an emergency.

Therapies are also used in many rehabs, and the plans are based on a person’s substance abuse patterns and their mental health. There are several options for therapy plans.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: CBT is commonly used to treat recovering patients and help them confront problematic feelings that might cause them to relapse when they return to normal society. This form of therapy is especially effective for those who also suffer from another condition like bipolar disorder.
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy: More severe mental illnesses like obsessive-compulsive disorder can warrant the need for DBT at a rehab facility. This form of therapy is similar to CBT with a particular focus on teaching stress management skills, improving self-esteem and encouraging patients to take action by removing the triggers in their life.
  • Experiential therapy: Non-traditional methods of therapy are often employed in rehabs, such as rock-climbing and other outdoor recreational activities.
  • Holistic therapy: These include acupuncture, guided meditation, yoga, art therapy and other activities that focus on overall well-being.

Once an addiction treatment program comes to an end, it’s strongly recommended that a client continue to take charge of their recovery by joining an aftercare support group. These groups are instrumental in maintaining long-term sobriety by providing support long after rehab.

Located in Effingham, New Hampshire, Green Mountain Treatment Center offers residency for adult men and women seeking treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders. The programs are comprehensive, combining a 12-step program with traditional therapies like CBT and holistic activities.

  • Accommodations and food: There are 75 beds at Green Mountain, and the facility rests on 72 acres of land. On the grounds, residents will find paved paths to walk and an apple orchard.
    • Men and women are housed separately on either side of the campus. The men’s facility is in the main center that also houses the cafeteria, the dining room and a great room of relaxation complete with couches, a fireplace and a grand piano. The women’s residence is in a secluded area across a walking bridge.
    • Clients share their gender-separate bedrooms in pairs, and each room has a private bathroom. The accommodations are somewhat rustic, but they’re also spacious and comfortable, complete with closets, dressers and full beds. Both buildings have their own living and lounge rooms where residents can enjoy comfortable couches and televisions.
    • Food is prepared by a chef, and the menus are developed by a licensed dietitian. Fruit, coffee, salad and dessert options are available throughout the day as well.
  • Treatment and staff: Like living accommodations, the treatment programs are gender-separate, so the women and men do not interact with each other during their 30-to-90-day stay. The program is structured into several group therapy sessions throughout the day along with chores, meditation and book study. There is a two-hour 12-step meeting off-site every day. Additionally, there is a dual-diagnosis program available for those with co-occurring disorders run by an on-site psychiatrist.
    • On any given day, a resident will wake up early in the morning, meditate and complete morning house chores that rotate among all the clients regularly. After breakfast, clients go to a community meeting and then attend relapse prevention groups until lunch. Individual therapy is also included depending on the client’s needs, and they will include evidence-based methods like CBT and DBT. Over the weekends, there is more flexibility to visit family and to enjoy casual group activities with other residents.
    • Green Mountain Treatment Center staffs about 100 at the facility, many of whom also live sober lives in recovery.
  • Amenities: Residents can access a gym on campus as well. At the gym, there are treadmills, ellipticals, StairMasters, stationary bikes, yoga mats and free weights. Treatment includes daily exercise. The men’s facility is also located near a greenhouse designed for therapeutic gardening.
    • All clients work closely with their therapists to create a plan for aftercare. This may be as simple as setting up a plan to attend a 12-step program locally, or it may involve moving into a sober living facility. Green Mountain staff works with residents to figure out their best options early on.
